Discovery Force for Good encourages volunteerism to strengthen South African society in line with our core purpose and Ambition 2023: to be the best insurance organisation in the world, pioneering and leading a global transformation of financial services impacting 100 million lives, 10 million lives directly, and acts as a powerful force for social good.

In line with Discovery's values, the vision of Discovery Force for Good is to deliver the best and most inclusive employee volunteer programme in the world, impacting 500,000 people directly, by maximising the rich skills and knowledge of employees, training volunteers, and leveraging off Discovery's intellectual property.

In reaching our vision, we aim to:

  • Align to the business strategy of shared value and replicate the social-value model used at Orange Farm.
  • Strengthen internal platforms to support volunteering and increase volunteerism to 60% of all employees by 2023
  • Address social development issues by collaborating with other organisations to amplify the effect.

Social Value Model - Orange Farm
(Gauteng)

Discovery, in partnership with the City of Johannesburg, embarked on a flagship employee volunteer programme that aims that sought to create and promote resilient communities. The project began in the south of Johannesburg, in Orange Farm.

Outcomes of the Social Value Model

+1,200 youth reached through various health-related initiatives by the Discovery Wellness Team.

+700 high-school learners participated in social behaviour-change interventions.

16 youths in full-time employment through Discovery Learnerships.

35 enterprises started at the Discovery Business Centre. The City of Johannesburg benchmarked the model as best practice and more than 7,000 youths have accessed the Centre.

22 principals trained in leadership by the Leadership and Development team.

Established technical skills centre, trained 129 youths, with 119 placed in job opportunities to date and 21 qualified as artisans.

Through partnership with Isipho Admin, three youths completed training and two have been placed in full-time employment.

Over 30% of Discovery's employees volunteered their skills and time, and six business units partnered with projects.
