Earning Vitality points for your workouts

This article is outdated (published in April 2016). Please refer to our most recent August 2016 points updates available here.

Getting physically active goes a long way to help combat the risk of lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

Global physical activity guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes per week (30 minutes on 5 days a week) of cardiovascular exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Recommendations for weight loss suggest an hour of physical activity on most days of the week. Activities that maintain or increase muscular strength and flexibility such as strength or weight training should be done in addition to this.

As a scientific-based wellness programme that aims to improve our members’ health, we are continuously reviewing ways to enhance health outcomes. As a result, we’re updating our points structure to ensure that we are awarding points consistent with clinically relevant and verifiable physical activity data.

This will help to ensure that you earn points for regular, individually-measured activity with the ultimate goal of making you healthier and more active. These revisions will come into effect from 2 April 2016.

You will be able to earn Vitality points with our extensive range of activity options:

Almost 200 000 members are now enjoying Vitality Active Rewards, and the number keeps growing. To allow these members time to adapt their exercise routines to the new ways of earning Vitality fitness points, we will be adjusting Vitality Active Rewards goals down to 300 points (unless their current goal is lower). This goal can be achieved by members through, for example, 1 parkrun or 3 gym visits or 3 days of tracking 10 000 or more steps or 3 moderate cardio-vascular workouts.

It is important to remember that Vitality Active Rewards goal targets are not static. A fundamental design principle on which Vitality Active Rewards has been built is that the goals are personalised and dynamic. When members miss goals, the weekly goal will start to drop – to nudge them to get active. And when members achieve their goals, their goals will start to increase – to motivate them to get fitter.
