Reaching your health goals with fitness devices linked to Vitality

This article is outdated (published in April 2016). Please refer to our most recent August 2016 points updates available here.

Fitness devices are a great way for you to track your health daily at the same time as earning Vitality fitness points.

As part of our commitment to encouraging members to get more active, we are refining the list of apps and fitness devices linked to Vitality. Our new device strategy is part of our continuous efforts to update the Vitality programme in line with the latest health research as well as wearable technology advancements, by focusing on tracking clinically relevant, verified exercise data.

This ensures that the Vitality programme stays up-to-date and relevant in an ever-changing and dynamic space. The updates will help to ensure that every member can improve their health and wellbeing while earning their fitness points through fitness activities.

The fitness devices and apps adidas miCoach, Moves, RunKeeper, Strava and MapMyFitness and Timex either do not distinguish between third party data or self-reported data, or utilise an unreliable integration. These apps compromise the accuracy and verifiability of the fitness data we receive, so we will no longer allocate Vitality fitness points for using these apps from 2 April 2016.

Should you have a Fitbit, Garmin, Jawbone or Polar device linked through MapMyFitness we ask that you please re-link your device directly to Vitality through the Discovery website or mobile app before these changes come into effect on 2 April 2016.

Members currently using Suunto and TomTom devices linked through MapMyFitness – for either activity tracking or heart rate tracking - will continue to earn Vitality points, as these device companies are currently working on an alternative solution to integrate with us directly and we hope to have feedback from them in the coming months. No new device linking will be possible for future users of these devices from 18 March 2016.

You can earn Vitality points for steps and speed through Health App, Samsung S Health, Polar and Garmin devices for one exercise session a day. You can also earn points for the number of steps taken throughout the day with Jawbone, Fitbit, Fitbug, Withings and Misfit devices.

You can earn higher Vitality points for workouts tracking your heart rate through Apple Watch, Samsung Gear watch and certain Polar and Garmin devices.
