Okay. So, you've decided that this year, you're going to run for your country in the Vitality Running World Cup? Well, whether you're a new runner or a pro, you know that eating right is vital when you decide to take up walking or running.

To compete in the Vitality Running World Cup, you'll need to walk or run at least 3 km in 30 minutes or less. Vitality dietitian Terry Harris says it's important to remember to eat healthily and to drink enough water. "Make water your beverage of choice and drink when you're thirsty," she says. Her top 5 tips for healthy eating include:

  1. Plan your food and drinks ahead of time.
  2. Choose healthy, unprocessed food over convenience food.
  3. Reduce your salt intake, limit sugar and avoid sugary drinks.
  4. Cook more often and when you do, try these healthier cooking methods.
  5. Eat more plants and plant fats like olive or canola oil, avocado, nuts and seeds, and add legumes (like beans, lentils, chickpeas and tofu) to your meals.
