When healthy eating is a challenge

There are a number of age related challenges that can hinder healthy eating.

Living alone or struggling to get around is a major culprit. Poor health can make it difficult to cook proper meals and feed yourself.

Certain medications cause a dry mouth or affect your appetite. A limited income, loss of taste and smell, as well as difficulty chewing or swallowing foods also hinder healthy eating.

If you struggle with any of these, it might be a good idea to see your doctor or a registered dietitian who will be able to assess your specific circumstance and suggest solutions that will work for you.

Loss of taste and smell

A loss of taste and smell can lead to a loss of appetite and unhealthy food choices or low nutrient intake. To counter any loss of taste and smell:

  • Flavour foods with lemon juice, vinegar, or a variety of salt free spices and herbs, such as mint, rosemary, cinnamon or paprika.
  • Add colours and textures to keep meals interesting. Try to make foods as tempting and tasty as possible.

Trouble eating or swallowing

Dental problems, such as tooth loss, use of dentures, and dry mouth are common in later life and can cause people to opt for soft foods only. This can lead to less variety in the diet resulting in less nutrients. To optimise your oral health:

  • Visit your dentist if you are having trouble chewing due to dental problems.
  • Try to reduce your sugar intake and keep sugar containing foods and drinks to meal times, as sugar increases the risk for tooth decay.

Limited income

You can eat healthily without spending a fortune. A few tips to control cost:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking tap water instead of bottled drinks.
  • Cut out unhealthy snacks, such as crisps or biscuits.
  • Buy produce in season or even grow your own.
  • Opt for cheaper proteins such as legumes, canned tuna or pilchards, and eggs.
  • Purchase non perishables in bulk.

Difficulty shopping or cooking for yourself

If you are having any difficulties buying food or preparing meals, get some help. Consider:

  • Ordering groceries online or ask a family member to help with shopping.
  • Food or meal delivery companies that will deliver ingredients needed for a meal, or fully prepared meals.
