The Discovery Health app is a digital healthcare tool created for members of Discovery Health Medical Scheme (DHMS). The app provides a single platform for all your healthcare needs, including options such as:

To make it easier for you, the app has four sections, each with various features. They are:

  • Just for you, found on the home page, is a personalised feature that recommends steps you can take to improve your health.
  • In the My health section, you can find information and programmes that are relevant to you. Use this section to see your health history, book a Health Check or take the Mental Wellbeing Assessment.
  • Use the My cover section to manage your medical aid plan, view your Medical Savings Account or WELLTH Fund, track and manage your benefits and limits, and track claims.
  • Through the Get care section, you can access immediate care in the healthcare system like Speak to a doctor now. In this section you can search for healthcare professionals and book directly with the practice. You can also order medicine and check your symptoms.

No, the Discovery Health app is separate from the Discovery app (which remains available to Discovery clients). The Discovery Health app has been created for Discovery Health Medical Scheme members to provide them access to an end-to-end digital healthcare journey and healthcare access options, in one cutting-edge, dedicated app.

When you select the Emergency assist button, you can phone an emergency operator or request a call back. Your Emergency assist calls are answered by a dedicated Netcare 911 team who will dispatch an ambulance to your location.

You don't even need to log in to the app to use the Emergency assist feature. You can click the red Emergency assist button on the login screen to phone an emergency operator.

You can also access Emergency assist when you are logged in to the app. Just click on the red Emergency assist button at the top of the home page to phone emergency services or to request a call back.

Virtual Urgent Care is provided through the Discovery Health app through the Speak to a doctor now feature in the Get care section of the app. Speak to a doctor now gives Discovery Health Medical Scheme members access to immediate, convenient and same-day care for medical conditions that are urgent but not life-threatening. Members can access a panel of experienced and highly skilled ER doctors (from ER Consulting Inc.) for a virtual consultation (with video) through the app, 24/7. These doctors can diagnose and treat members virtually, give members a script, and send an ambulance if needed.

There is a difference between urgent care and non-urgent care, and the type of care you receive determines how the service is paid for. Here's how it works:

Urgent care is treatment for medical conditions that are not medical emergencies, but require treatment within 24 hours.

You can use the Speak to a doctor now feature in your Discovery Health app to connect with a doctor for urgent care. Urgent care consultations are paid for directly by Discovery Health Medical Scheme.

You can also use the Speak to a doctor now feature to speak to a doctor for non-urgent care (for a condition that doesn't need same-day treatment). In this case, or if your doctor deems your condition to be non-urgent, your consultation will be paid for from your available day-to-day benefits, such as your Medical Savings Account, if funds are available. If no funds are available, you will pay for the service from your own pocket.

In emergency medical situations, please go directly to the Emergency assist option for immediate access to emergency services and support.

The experienced emergency doctors who are available through Speak to a doctor now are highly skilled in virtual consultations and assessments. They will take you through a range of clarifying questions before suggesting the next steps to take, like sending you a prescription, advising you to see a doctor face-to-face, or sending an ambulance to your location if needed.

The Discovery Health app's Virtual Physical Therapy feature allows members to:

  • Find and consult with a physiotherapist, chiropractor or biokineticist
  • Get AI-powered support with rehabilitation exercises
  • Chat to a coach for extra assistance.

Once your physical therapy has been prescribed, log in to the Discovery Health app. Go to the My health tab, then click on the Genie Health button.

The Mental Wellbeing Assessment, available in the My Health section of the app, is a quick and easy way to see if you're at risk of conditions like depression and anxiety. The assessment consists of simple multiple-choice questions relating to depression, anxiety, resilience, wellbeing, sleep and drinking. If the assessment shows that you're at risk, you will be referred to a doctor or psychologist for help.

Digital therapeutics (DTx) are a new class of therapy for mental health. The therapy gets prescribed by a healthcare professional and is registered with the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA).

Discovery Health's internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (ICBT) solution, delivered in partnership with SilverCloud®, gives you access to innovative technology for mental health.

The Digital Therapeutics (DTx) for Mental Health tool needs to be prescribed to you by your doctor, psychologist or psychiatrist - in the same way that medicine would be prescribed. Once your provider has prescribed DTx, you simply open your Discovery Health app and go to the My health section. Then, click on the 'Silvercloud' button. The feature lets you access personalised internet-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy 24/7, no matter where you are located.

Use the app's quick and easy AI-based symptom checker. First, log in to the Discovery Health app and click on the Check my symptoms button at the bottom of the home page or in the Get care section of the app.

A list of symptoms that are related to emergency conditions will appear and you must then choose whether or not you are experiencing any of those symptoms. If you do have those symptoms, the app will give you the option to phone an emergency operator or go to the nearest hospital.

If you do not have symptoms often linked to emergency conditions, you will be asked to answer further questions about your symptoms. Based on your responses, the app will give you the option to Speak to a doctor now for urgent care, or in non-urgent cases, you can use the app to book a doctor's appointment.

Yes, you can use the app's Online pharmacy feature, in the Get care section, to order and track prescribed and over-the-counter medicine.

Yes, you can. In the My cover part of the app, you can easily view your Medical Savings Account or WELLTH Fund, track and manage your benefits, and track the real-time processing of your claims.

When you use the app to search for healthcare providers, you get search results for providers closest to you. The results are also in line with your specific health plan.
